Since 1983, Mountain Stage has been the home of live music on public radio. Produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and distributed by NPR Music, each two-hour episode of Mountain Stage can be heard every week on nearly around 270 stations across America, and around the world via NPR Music and mountainstage.org.
Recorded in front of a live audience, Mountain Stage features performances from seasoned legends and emerging stars in genres ranging from folk, blues, and country; to indie rock, synth pop, world music, alternative, and beyond.
In September 2021, W.Va. native and Grammy winning performer Kathy Mattea became the host of Mountain Stage, a role assumed from co-founder and artistic director Larry Groce, who hosted more than 900 episodes over a remarkable 38 year career. Occasionally our listeners will hear guest-host David Mayfield, an accomplished Ohio-based instrumentalist, songwriter and singer, standing in for Kathy.
Mountain Stage has proudly provided a platform for emerging and established artists since 1983. Whether you’re new to the show, or you’ve been around since the early days – we’re glad you’re here.
We invite you to dig into our podcast featuring archived episodes at NPR Music and watch performances from select shows on Live Sessions.

About the Live Show
Most of our live-shows are held at the Culture Center Theater, located inside building #435 on the State Capitol Grounds in Charleston, West Virginia. All Culture Center shows are general admission seating and tickets are sold through our ticketing service Eventbrite. Doors to the Culture Center Great Hall open at 5p.m. on show-day. The theater opens at 6:30pm and showtime is 7pm. The theater is located inside the same structure as the WV State Museum and the State Museum Gift Shop. Here is a link to the venue on Google Maps.
When we bring the show to other venues, like the Canady Creative Arts Center at WVU in Morgantown, WV, Memorial Auditorium in Athens, OH, or other venues, the tickets for these events are handled by the host organization. You’ll find those ticket links and venue info on our Live Show Schedule, and in our listings on Eventbrite.
